You Are My Sunshine

I have always sung ” You Are My Sunshine” to the kids, and it is the song that Miss Julia most relates to our quiet time together. When she is sad, sick, stressed, or missing me, she will sing it to me softly and, if possible, stroke my face and hair.

Last year, for Christmas, Miss Julia received this beautiful blanket, which I keep hung over the back of my Mama’s rocking chair. When moving us in the house, my cousin Chris specially picked its spot by the window, so that the light comes softly and beautifully in the panes.

My Mama graduated in June 1975. I was born in December. Her own grandmother, my Great-Granny Sarah Etta Bryant, bought her the chair for a graduation gift. My earliest memories are of Mama rocking us in it and, eventually, she rocked her own grandchildren it the chair.

Now, I get to rock them, too.

And, one day, I will get to rock my own grandbabies in this same chair, singing “You Are My Sunshine,” just as my Mama did with me. I hope I have tons of them. Houses are meant to be overflowing with children.
